As wedding planners, we’re fortunate to get to play such a unique role in the lives of our couples. We spend a huge amount of time planning and dreaming together for their big day; and we’re with them from start to finish on one of the most important days of their lives. However, sadly, when the wedding concludes, that’s where many of us in this industry lose touch.
So instead of wishing our couples a fond farewell at the conclusion of their wedding day and never circling back, we want to check in on them and see how they look back on such a momentous occasion. Would they make changes with the gift of hindsight? Was the stress of wedding planning really worth it? What advice would they give to those just beginning their own marriage journey?
In our Anniversary Check-In series, we’ll talk to married couples to get their thoughts as they approach the celebration of another year of marriage (whether that’s one year or ten). And of course we’ll ask them questions separately in order to compare their answers.
Macky & Joe – 6 Years of Marriage
How long have you been married to your spouse?
Macky: As of September 20, 2020, we’ve been married for six years.
Joe: We’ve been married since 2014.
Looking back what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?
Macky: I’ll always remember taking photos together immediately following the ceremony. It was the first time that we’d been together alone (other than a photographer nearby) all day, and we could actually process what had just happened. Also, the stress of the ceremony had passed, and we could take a deep breath and laugh about how crazy weddings are.
Joe: My brothers and I went for a good run the morning of; it had rained so it was nice and cool. No, but seriously, seeing Macky step out from the back room to walk down the aisle was my favorite moment.
In hindsight, is there anything specific that you wish you would have done differently in regards to your wedding day?
Macky: I really can’t think of any specific things that I would have changed. Of course, styles evolve and some of the decisions we made won’t always be fashionable or seem right to everyone else. But everything that we chose felt right at the time and made us happy.
Joe: Nope.
What was the biggest source of stress while wedding planning? And was that stress warranted?
Macky: Every wedding decision feels stressful in the moment. From choosing an actual date to paring back the guest list, it all felt so incredibly important while in the midst of it. However, I don’t think any of the stress was really warranted. Even if you encounter wedding day hiccups, they’ll usually resolve themselves in one form or another. And if not, you’ll have a story to tell for the rest of your life.
Joe: Guest list drama, and no, the stress wasn’t warranted. The people that love you will be understanding with the decisions that you need to make – whether those are based on budget, venue limitations, or really any reason at all.
If given the chance to redistribute your wedding budget, is there something that you would now spend more/less money on for your wedding day?
Macky: I would maybe have put a little more money towards our photographer. I absolutely love our wedding photos and have no regrets concerning the photos we have. However, it would have been fun to have a second shooter to see some different angles for a different perspective. I wouldn’t change a thing otherwise.
Joe: I should have spent more money on my suit.
What one piece of advice would you give to a newly married couple today?
Macky: Try not to let little arguments reach a boiling point. If you take the time to address little issues early on, it may help to prevent bigger problems in the future.
Joe: Create a budget together and stick with it. And always tell each other when you’re mad about something and why.
